We also met a lift mgr named Bill. He saw Hugh's XGames jacket and said "Hey, do you know Tom MAhoney?". Well, turns out his condo in Squaw VAlley is where Tom squats. It's a small world...

22 feet of sunbaked mashed potatoes

We went up this weekend and skiied Sugarbowl from 2:30-4, a special deal for 15$. We got an extra bonus because they kept the lifts running until 4:45pm!
The snow was melted and refrozen. The sun was out and it was like Spring skiing.
On Sunday as part of our "Skiing Safari" we skiied Soda Springs. Yes, the "winter resort" with 2 lifts.
All day ticket was 25$. They have 2 large tubing parks and a kiddy area with fun things to do. This is an ideal area to teach kids (or adults) how to ski. It was very casual.
We found a steep face and some not-so-crunchy snow.

MLK Weekend

We won't be joining the entire Bay Area in Tahoe this weekend-bettin' the snow will still be there next week...:(

More snow in Tahoe!

It has been raining and snowing for 2 weeks now. Tahoe got another 6+ feet this weekend and it is the most snow the Sierras have gotten since 1916!
Meredith went up early on Thurs but by Thursday afternoon we knew we wouldn't be making it up. That's OK though because we got freshies the weekend before.

Sugarbowl stats as of 1/10/05:
Elevation 24 Hour Snow Storm Total Base Depth
6,883' 6 inches 54 inches 10 feet
8,383' 8 inches 71 inches 13 feet

P.S.
Kirkwood is reporting an 18 foot base!

8 feet! Happy New Year 2005!

The Angus cabin is just what I expected. It is quietly tucked into the West side of Donner Lake. This weekend received 8 feet of snow. I couldn't help think about the Donner Party. The berms on the road were over 6 feet after being snow-blowed. On Monday we skiied Homewood. Quail Park was an unexpected hike but it was STEEP and BOTTOMLESS! My new Machete skis performed better than I could have imagined. Thank You Shane McConkey!
Next day we used our free tickets to Heavenly from the Warren Miller film "Impact" we attended in San Rafael. Heavenly is OK if you have free tickets. Otherwise, I would suggest avoiding it and going to Kirkwood!

6 feet of snow and falling

Well, we are trying to leave SF and go up but it has been snowing for a week! It is Sunday after New Years and many people are trying to get out of the mountains too. There are R4 chain restrictions: that means on all 4 tires! Truckee hit a record last week getting 4 in in 24 hours.
Wish us luck
